Jay Patel, M.D., Ph.D
Co-Chief Investment Officer
"I enrolled in an accounting class in high school with trepidation, knowing that college admissions officers might not give it much weight," Jay recalls. "Of course, to keep up with other students, I also enrolled in AP Calculus, AP Economics, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, and other AP classes—AP galore."
Jay's Story
While Jay notes that memory can blur the details over time, the arc of his story offers a panoramic view of his journey. It’s a path from an intellectually curious teenager to a disciplined, insightful, and successful steward of capital, whose success stems from both analytical rigor and unwavering integrity.
Jay continued, "The documentary on Enron in that class imprinted a message I will never forget—fraud eventually leads to ruin, regardless of pedigree, connections, or degrees from elite colleges."
That class caused side effects: Jay began investing his gift money in stocks and later enrolled in more economics and business courses in college.
He started devouring—and still feasts on—a sprawling banquet of financial wisdom, from the art of investment and the science of valuation to the quirks of statistics, the psychology of behavioral finance, and the chess-like mastery of decision-making. The playbooks of titans like Warren Buffett, Peter Lynch, John Templeton, Phil Fisher, and Ben Graham shaped his dynamic investment process. At the same time, he revels in dissecting the intricate gears of businesses to uncover what makes them thrive.
Jay's education extended far beyond textbooks. His time on the tennis courts, competing for his high school varsity team and the Colorado District squad of the Intermountain Section, was formative. The sport sculpted not just his athletic prowess but his character: sportsmanship, strategic thinking, teamwork, relentless preparation, and resilience. His efforts earned him numerous trophies, but one stands above the rest—the 2004 John Hough Award, recognizing his sportsmanship, leadership, and achievement.
A true embodiment of the well-rounded individual, Jay also achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. For his project, he constructed scorecards for local tennis courts, and by teaming up with the organization Tennis Mania, he taught tennis to underprivileged children. He rounded out the gift by donating a ball machine and tennis balls.
At Brandeis University, Jay distinguished himself in biochemistry, graduating *magna cum laude* with high honors. His pursuit of knowledge continued at Georgetown, where he earned an MD-PhD, immersing himself in the intricacies of tumor biology.
His path seemed set as he began a residency in internal medicine at the University of Utah. But after a year, he found himself at a crossroads. Witnessing the rapid evolution of healthcare, he began to question whether he was on the right path. A new vision took shape: Jay realized his passion for science and his proficiency in finance could converge to create a far greater impact. He envisioned himself guiding investments toward companies developing life-saving treatments, potentially helping millions instead of one patient at a time.
With trepidation, he pivoted, leaving the traditional path of medicine to embark on a new journey where he could leverage his skills to earn his livelihood and benefit society.
Today, Jay has fully immersed himself in the world of finance. Working tirelessly, he sharpens his skills in financial modeling, valuation, and investment analysis. In addition to financial literature, he reads widely on various subjects, especially history, and has visited numerous Civil War monuments.
Over the last several years, I have brainstormed with him on topics ranging from individual securities to the business cycle and macroeconomics. His input has helped Pavaki Capital generate substantial returns: an 881% cumulative return over nine years—a solid 28% annualized performance.
Pavaki will benefit tremendously from his expertise and integrity.
Welcome, Jay!
Sincerely,
Ashok
P.S.
In true Jay fashion, he recently earned his Corporate Finance Institute (CFI) certificate through intensive study—a strategic choice that allowed him to rapidly gain comprehensive financial expertise without the two- to three-year process for the highly sought-after CFA designation. Smart, efficient, and immediately applicable? That's our Jay.
